books

i work at barnes and noble. i get 30% off all books and i get to take out all hardcovers for free and bring them back in 2 weeks, like the library. trouble is, i don't know what to read! it's been so long since i have read anything entirely for pleasure. i figure all of you are something like me in one way or another, and probably like what i like..ish..kinda, so recommend me some books! could each of you send me the names of your favorite books- 2 classics and 2 contemporary- only fiction please. thanks!

  1. here are not necessarily my favorites, but ones that i highly recommend (although might have already read)!

    classics:
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
    Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

    contemporary:
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende (the as official as an author could be of the Chapman spirit)
World According to Garp by John Irving

  2. I second East of Eden. I also like the Good Earth for classics, but maybe you've already read that...

It's been so long since I've read something purely for pleasure that I don't have any contemporary suggestions. I did like Middlesex (kind of a classic?), I Know this Much is True (Wally Lamb), and the Phillip Pullman Golden Compass series...3 books but i can't remember all the titles. Maybe too science fictiony for you...but i liked them once upon a time.

Becky I wanna hear your suggestions. I should start reading again too.

  3. I third East of Eden. Needless to say, that book royally kicks ass (but give yourself loads of time to read it). For my other classic, I would say Dubliners by James Joyce. Don't let his name scare you - it's a collection of short stories that are accessible and fun.

For my contemporary books, I would say: Crossing the Mangrove by Maryse Condé, and Snow by Orhan Pamuk.

  6. Oh my god East of Eden. And The Grapes of Wrath. But East of Eden.

Remember when I had my face stuck in it for the entire week in Florida? Yeah, that's right.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway.
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
    Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie.
    Anna Karenina by Tolstoy.
    Lolita by Nabokov.

Okay, I'm done. Sorry for going over budget.

Oh wait! Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, for I'm-dying-inside-laughs.

  7. Okay! I'll go under-budget:
The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay (Michael Chabon). Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. (Forget author -- super corny title, but actually really really great.) These are both contemporary. I think Destry-beans covered my share of classics -- absolute yes to Love in the Time of Cholera and Lolita! Happy reading. :)
